People Behind DriveNets: Calin Miculescu

The People Behind” is a blog series meant to share stories of the amazing individuals behind DriveNets. From developers and engineers to sales managers, we’ll get to the heart of the team behind the disruption of the networking industry, so you can get to know them a little better!

This week, meet Calin Miculescu. Calin is in Technical Sales with many years of deep experience in the telecommunications sector. He has focused his work on end-to-end network architectures for large communications service providers and mission critical systems for enterprise customers, joining DriveNets after nearly 12 years at Nokia.

What brought you to DriveNets?

“I always acted like I was part of a startup ever since I started in the telecom industry, more than 10 years ago,” said Calin. He worked in all areas of the network acting as a change agent and helped deploy a greenfield LTE network that became the fourth largest in Canada.  Additionally, he led the design of a Cable MSO network for their first XGS-PON Residential service and pioneered the private 5G market with Nokia Enterprise.  Calin has always enjoyed taking on challenges in new areas of the network.

So, with DriveNets, the disaggregated networking space looked very interesting. “I could bring my startup style and get into the space of disaggregated networking,” explained Calin.

As traffic patterns increasingly skyrocketed and the monolithic chassis could no longer affordably scale to meet these new network demands, Calin wanted to get on board and help work on this new space.

What are your job responsibilities now?

Calin serves DriveNets in Technical Sales focusing on AT&T and Canada. “Tackling this inspiring area of the network, let’s me be a change agent, not just for the Canadian market, but for the international one as well,” he said.

Working in a dynamic environment, Calin enjoys seeing projects evolve from a neat idea to delivery, then working with customers on next generational architectures and ultimately reaching the consumer and business markets.

“I see myself helping ISPs to evolve their network into the disaggregated world,” Calin explained, “For Canadian service providers operating at petabyte scale, I get to show them the value of disaggregation, how they can upgrade to multiservices and next gen architecture.”

Why should Service Providers prefer the DriveNets solution over the competition?

Offering a differentiated way of delivering new features to the network, DriveNets isn’t stuck on a legacy view of the network, rather it’s all in a containerized base that takes advantage of existing hardware. “DriveNets isn’t encumbered by how things were done yesterday,” said Calin. The company is motivated to move the networking industry in a new direction, and not be driven to still make money from old T1 ports.

“At DriveNets we will always do the right thing for the customer,” Calin said, “We will always prioritize innovation and differentiation for the service provider, with features like multiservices and hot patching.

What is the most exciting part of working in DriveNets?

An incredible culture that drives change throughout the organization. “It’s not easy to maintain the thrill of a startup culture when you reach a certain size,” related Calin, “I feel the vibe of the can-do attitude, a testament to hard work that motivates hundreds, lead by an impressive management team that offers me a lot of their time to learn from them.”

How do you like to start your working day?

Calin starts off early in the morning with an espresso, then starts reading and responding to urgent emails. After he gets the kids off to school, he really dives into his day, working with our customers and internal teams.

Do you have a favorite quote?

“When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.” – Elon Musk.

This kind of relates to DriveNets. “What are the chances of a new networking vendor gaining this level of success in such an established and competitive space,” said Calin.
